The almost 40 different vineyard blocks planted across our property showcase a variety of terroir expressions, with clonal selections and viticultural decisions spanning five decades. About 70% of our vineyard is planted to Pinot noir, another 25% to Chardonnay and the remaining 5% to Pinot meunier, planted on a small block at the highest point of the property.
Walking the vineyard rows, your eye can piece together the history of viticultural experimentation. It’s easy to see the differences in spacing between vines and rows, as well as the various row orientations depending on the steepness of the slope at different elevations.
Shown in the foreground, above, are some of these Pinot meunier vines planted in 1998. Notice their size and structure in contrast to the vines just one row downhill- Pinot noir Pommard clones planted in 1974. If those gnarly, old Pinot noir vines could talk, they would tell wonderful stories of the innovative spirit at Knudsen Vineyards in the early days.
