Family Owned Vineyard Estate in the Dundee Hills AVA of Oregon’s Willamette Valley since 1971.
Our Story
H o w I t A l l B e g a n
In 1971, Cal and Julia Lee Knudsen purchased a 230-acre former walnut orchard in Oregon’s Dundee Hills with a vision that was ambitious for its time: to grow and produce world-class still and sparkling wines in the Willamette Valley.
What drew them here was the land itself. Two southeast-facing slopes, rich Jory soils, and a remarkable position overlooking the fertile Willamette Valley, with views of Mt. Hood, offered ideal conditions for growing exceptional fruit. At a time when Oregon wine was still in its infancy, the Knudsens recognized the potential of this place and committed to helping shape its future.
The Journey
1971
Planting the Vision
Cal and Julia Lee Knudsen purchased a 200-acre former walnut orchard in Oregon’s Dundee Hills with a bold vision for the future of Oregon wine. Drawn to the site’s rolling southeast slopes, rich Jory soils, and remarkable setting, they planted the roots of what would become one of the region’s pioneering vineyard sites.
1975
A Historic Partnership
Cal Knudsen partnered with pioneering Oregon winemaker Dick Erath to establish the Knudsen Erath Winery. Operating as Oregon Bonded Winery No. 52, it became the first commercial winery in the Dundee Hills and helped define the region’s early reputation for exceptional Pinot noir.

A Sparkling Legacy
2009
Returning to the Land
Following Cal Knudsen’s passing, the next generation returned to the vineyard with renewed purpose. Recognizing the land as part of the family’s identity, they committed to sustainable stewardship of the vineyard and to carrying its story forward.
2014
The Knudsen Label Returns
The family launched Knudsen Vineyards’ first estate wine label in more than 25 years, beginning with the 2012 Pinot noir and followed by Chardonnay shortly after. It marked a new chapter—sharing estate-grown wines directly under the Knudsen name.
2020
Opening the Outlook
The Outlook at Knudsen Vineyards opened as a tasting room devoted exclusively to estate-grown wines. More than a destination, it became a place to gather, share, and continue the tradition of welcoming others to experience the vineyard.
