Experimentation and innovative thinking have always been cornerstones of the Knudsen Vineyards story.
In 1971, C. Calvert “Cal” and Julia Lee Knudsen purchased a 200-acre former walnut orchard in Oregon’s Dundee Hills, helping lay the foundation for what would become one of the world’s premier cool-climate wine regions.
Today, Oregon wine history is recognized around the world for exceptional Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Knudsen Vineyards has proudly contributed to that story for more than 50 years through careful vineyard stewardship, innovation, and a commitment to quality.
From Pioneer Vineyard to World-Class Wine Region
In the early years, there was no roadmap for establishing a successful vineyard in Oregon. Every decision—from selecting grape clones and rootstocks to determining row spacing, elevation, and sun exposure—required experimentation and long-term observation.
Those decades of learning continue to guide our vineyard today. Modern viticultural practices, combined with detailed record keeping and an intimate understanding of the Dundee Hills estate, allow us to consistently produce premium Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.
The remarkable growth of the Oregon wine industry is a story of vision, perseverance, and collaboration. We are honored that Knudsen Vineyards has played a role in that journey and continues to help shape the future of Oregon wine history.
