Cal Knudsen realized a long held dream of growing grapes in Oregon, the climate and topography of which he felt was much like that of the great Burgundy (Pinot Noir) region of France. He bought land overlooking Mount Hood and the Willamette Valley in the middle of the Red Hills of Dundee and, a year later, he and his family planted the first vines for Knudsen Vineyards. Today, the 120-acre vineyard produces pinot noir and chardonnay grapes, with a mix of old vine blocks and new high-density blocks planted with “Old World” Dijon clones. Knudsen Vineyards is certified sustainable by L.I.V.E. and is planted using state-of-the-art viticultural techniques, informed by over 35 years of experience in this location. Future plans include upgrading the entire vineyard by replacing own-rooted with grafted stock to eliminate susceptibility to disease and improve vine quality.
Since 1987, Knudsen Vineyards’ harvest has been used to produce wines for Argyle Winery. The high elevation blocks of this landmark Dundee Hills site are key components in Argyle’s sparkling wines. Argyle Winery produces two award winning sparklers made exclusively with grapes from Knudsen Vineyards: Argyle Knudsen Vineyards Brut and Argyle Knudsen Vineyards Blanc de Blancs Julia Lee’s Block, named in memory of Julia Lee Knudsen, Cal’s wife and co-founder of the vineyard. The Blanc de Blancs is made from 100% Dijon-clone Chardonnay grapes. Lower elevation blocks contribute pinot noir grapes exclusively to Argyle’s highly rated Spirithouse Pinot Noir.
Recently, second generation participation in ownership and management has brought additional energy, enthusiasm and ongoing commitment to the enterprise. Founder Cal Knudsen is joined by his daughter, Page Knudsen Cowles, in the role of Managing Director, and his three sons, Cal Knudsen, Jr, Colin Knudsen and David Knudsen. The Knudsen family is grateful for the legacy Cal has created as a pioneer in the Oregon wine industry and will continue to engage in enlightened and thoughtful viticulture and stewardship of the land.
